Lenovo Adopts Chinese-Made SSD for Its PCs

Lenovo has reportedly begun using Chinese-made SSDs from Yangtze Memory Technologies (YMTC) in its laptops for the first time. The move comes as the global memory and storage market continues to face supply shortages throughout 2026.

According to a report from Notebookcheck, the publication tested the new SSD inside the Lenovo ThinkBook 14 G9 IPL. The laptop featured a 512GB M.2 2242 NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSD manufactured by YMTC.

The drive underwent multiple benchmark tests to evaluate its performance against SSDs commonly found in business laptops and desktop PCs.

Chinese SSD Delivers Below-Average Performance

Benchmark results showed that the Chinese-made SSD performed below average compared with competing drives in the same category. Sequential read speeds reached approximately 3.95GB/s, while sequential write speeds peaked at around 2.5GB/s.

The drive also produced relatively modest results in 4K random read and write tests, which measure storage performance during everyday multitasking and small file operations.

Although these figures do not place the SSD among the fastest available, the report suggests that its significance lies less in raw performance and more in what it represents for the global storage industry.

Lenovo later confirmed that laptops equipped with YMTC SSDs are not intended for the U.S. market.

The company explained that the review unit tested by Notebookcheck was configured for Germany, meaning some European customers may receive Lenovo laptops with YMTC storage, while systems sold in the United States will continue using SSDs from other suppliers.

Global Memory Shortage Changes the Market

Around fifteen years ago, SSDs were considered premium storage devices because of their relatively high prices. Advances in manufacturing and increased production eventually made fast storage a standard feature in most modern laptops.

However, that trend has shifted during 2026 as demand driven by artificial intelligence has significantly increased pressure on global memory supplies.

Large AI data centers have consumed growing volumes of RAM, SSD, and even HDD storage components, creating shortages across multiple segments of the storage market.

The resulting supply constraints have pushed prices higher, increasing laptop manufacturing costs and forcing PC makers to secure alternative component suppliers.

According to the report, the current market conditions create an ideal opportunity for new storage manufacturers to expand while long-established suppliers struggle to meet demand.

Companies such as Samsung, Kioxia, and Western Digital have dominated the SSD market for years, but Chinese manufacturer YMTC is now emerging as a potential alternative.

YMTC Moves Closer to the Global Consumer Market

The report suggests that Lenovo’s decision to ship laptops with YMTC SSDs represents an important milestone for the Chinese storage manufacturer.

As the world’s largest PC maker, Lenovo’s adoption of YMTC storage could accelerate the company’s expansion into mainstream consumer markets after years of limited presence outside China.

The shift also reflects broader efforts by PC manufacturers to diversify supply chains as the global memory shortage continues.

Earlier this year, Lenovo informed business partners that it planned to increase prices for selected PCs and commercial products because of rising memory costs.

Company executives have repeatedly warned that AI-driven demand for memory chips continues to place significant pressure on the PC industry.

Lenovo also revealed that it increased its memory inventory by roughly 50% above normal levels to prepare for additional price increases, describing current memory cost inflation as unprecedented.

Lenovo’s decision to introduce YMTC SSDs into selected laptops reflects more than a simple supplier change. It signals a broader transformation in the global storage industry, where supply chain diversification has become increasingly important as AI-related demand continues to reshape the semiconductor market.

Although the tested SSD falls behind leading competitors in raw performance, Lenovo appears willing to prioritize component availability over benchmark results in certain regions. If YMTC continues improving its technology while expanding production capacity, the company could become a much stronger competitor to established SSD manufacturers over the next few years.

For Lenovo, adopting additional storage suppliers may also reduce dependence on traditional vendors and help mitigate future supply disruptions. The long-term success of this strategy will ultimately depend on whether YMTC can close the performance gap while maintaining competitive pricing and reliable production.
