ChatGPT Gets GPT-5.6 as OpenAI Launches New ChatGPT Work Tools

OpenAI has officially launched its GPT-5.6 family of AI models for general availability alongside the introduction of ChatGPT Work, a new AI agent built into ChatGPT that can execute long-running, multi-step tasks across connected applications, files, and workflows with minimal user intervention.

The GPT-5.6 lineup consists of three primary models: Sol, the company’s flagship model; Terra, designed for balanced everyday use; and Luna, optimized for speed and cost efficiency.

According to OpenAI, the new models represent a shift from AI systems that simply answer questions to agents capable of completing real work through integration with ChatGPT Work, Codex, and the OpenAI API.

GPT-5.6 Sol Leads the New Model Family

OpenAI describes GPT-5.6 Sol as its most capable AI model to date, delivering state-of-the-art performance across software development, knowledge work, scientific research, and cybersecurity.

The company says Sol requires fewer tokens while offering lower operating costs than previous OpenAI models, positioning it as a more efficient option compared with competing AI systems from Google and Anthropic.

According to OpenAI, this enables users to accomplish more work for the same cost or achieve comparable results with lower overall compute expenses.

Ultra Mode Coordinates Multiple AI Agents

The company also introduced Ultra Mode, the highest-performance configuration available for GPT-5.6.

Ultra automatically coordinates four AI agents in parallel to tackle complex tasks, with support for scaling to up to 16 agents in certain scenarios.

The feature is designed for compute-intensive workloads such as multi-stage research, financial analysis, advanced software engineering, cybersecurity testing, and professionally designed reports and presentations.

ChatGPT Work Brings Autonomous Productivity

Alongside GPT-5.6, OpenAI unveiled ChatGPT Work, an intelligent AI agent capable of gathering information from connected applications and workflows before generating spreadsheets, presentations, documents, reports, and even web applications.

After users connect supported services, ChatGPT Work can understand objectives, retrieve relevant information, create deliverables, and continuously refine drafts while keeping users in control of approvals and workflow decisions.

Sites Turns Ideas Into Web Applications

OpenAI also launched a public preview of Sites, allowing users to transform ideas and projects into interactive websites or web applications that can be shared through a simple link.

Sites supports dashboards, project trackers, calendars, prototypes, internal portals, and interactive reports that remain synchronized as underlying information changes.

Designed for Long-Running Tasks

ChatGPT Work can remain active for hours when necessary by breaking projects into smaller tasks and executing them independently while allowing users to monitor progress, answer questions, redirect work, and approve important actions.

Powered by GPT-5.6, the agent is capable of reasoning across complex, multi-step workflows while generating content that follows company templates and reference materials.

Codex Becomes Part of ChatGPT

OpenAI has integrated Codex directly into ChatGPT Work, enabling ChatGPT to move beyond conversational assistance and actively perform work across the web, desktop applications, and mobile devices.

The company says more than 5 million people use Codex every week, with over 1 million users now relying on it for tasks beyond software development.

Desktop Integration and Scheduled Automation

ChatGPT Work can access local files and applications on Windows and macOS, while a new built-in browser enables it to interact with websites and services such as Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 without leaving ChatGPT.

OpenAI also announced that it will discontinue its standalone Atlas browser in favor of the integrated browsing experience.

Through Computer Use, ChatGPT can interact directly with a user’s computer by clicking, typing, moving files, and completing actions across applications.

Meanwhile, Scheduled Tasks enables recurring or event-driven automation, allowing ChatGPT to summarize Slack or Microsoft Teams conversations, update presentations, monitor dashboards, analyze customer feedback, and generate reports automatically.

ChatGPT Work is now available on the web and mobile apps for Pro, Enterprise, and Edu subscribers, with support for Plus and Business users arriving soon.

The desktop experience will also roll out globally on Windows and macOS, with Chat, Work, and Codex modes available across both paid and free ChatGPT plans.

Vexiora Analysis

The launch of GPT-5.6 and ChatGPT Work marks OpenAI’s transition from building conversational AI assistants to delivering autonomous productivity platforms capable of completing real-world work across multiple applications and services. By combining advanced reasoning, AI agents, computer control, and workflow automation, OpenAI is positioning ChatGPT as a comprehensive digital workspace rather than simply a chatbot.

As competition among OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and Anthropic increasingly shifts toward AI agents, the ability to execute tasks—not just generate responses—may become the defining differentiator. If OpenAI successfully expands this ecosystem while maintaining reliability and security, ChatGPT could evolve into one of the most widely used AI productivity platforms for both individuals and enterprises.
