Sony has announced a major change to its PlayStation game distribution strategy, confirming that it will stop producing physical game discs for all new releases starting in January 2028. The move reflects the company’s long-term commitment to digital distribution as more players choose to purchase and download games online.
Sony Embraces a Fully Digital Future
According to Sony, digital sales accounted for nearly 80% of full-game sales during the 2025 fiscal year, highlighting the continued shift away from physical media and toward digital storefronts.
The company believes this transition reflects changing consumer behavior, with more players preferring the convenience of downloading games directly to their consoles instead of purchasing physical copies.
New PlayStation Games Will Be Digital-Only
Sony confirmed that all PlayStation titles released after January 2028 will be available exclusively through the PlayStation Store. Retailers will also sell these games as digital download codes rather than physical discs.
Games released before the transition—or already scheduled for physical release—will remain available without any changes.
PlayStation Store Support Ends for Older Consoles
Alongside this announcement, Sony revealed plans to gradually shut down the PlayStation Store for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita systems. The phased rollout will begin in selected markets this year before expanding globally, with the shutdown expected to be completed by July 2027.
The company explained that these legacy systems, now between 15 and 20 years old, can no longer support the modern payment infrastructure used by the PlayStation Network, making continued store operations technically impractical.
Once the stores close, users will no longer be able to purchase new games or content. However, previously purchased titles and downloadable content will remain available for download for a limited period.
Rollout Begins in Selected Markets
Sony stated that the PlayStation Store shutdown will first begin in Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua starting in August, before expanding to additional markets across Latin America and the Middle East later this year.
The PlayStation Stores for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita are expected to close permanently in all remaining regions by July 2027.
Vexiora Analysis
Sony’s decision marks another major milestone in the gaming industry’s shift toward digital distribution. As digital game sales continue to grow, eliminating physical discs allows the company to reduce manufacturing and distribution costs while delivering games to players faster and more efficiently.
However, the transition also brings new challenges, including increased storage requirements, greater reliance on internet connectivity, and ongoing concerns about digital ownership compared with physical media. Even so, the future of gaming appears to be increasingly digital, and Sony is positioning PlayStation to lead that transition.
